Clean under the free edge of the nail with the cap of the pencil. Simply moisten the tip of the pencil and pass under the tip of your nails. Then apply a protective base coat, followed by colourless or pastel nail polish and a top coat.

Colouring under the free edge of the nail instead of painting the tip of the nail white gives a much more subtle, natural looking French manicure.
